WLAN-roaming WiFi Roaming Scheme Benefits for operators deploying MTT's solution

The OJSC “MTT” offers subscribers of telecommunication networks a promising service, such as  roaming in the WLAN network. Users of the WLAN-roaming service will be provided with:

  • National  WLAN-roaming in Russia,
  • International WLAN-roaming all over the world.

WLAN-roaming capabilities are enormous:

  • over 200 WiFi-access points in Russia;
  • over 40,000 WiFi-access points on a global basis.

WLAN-roaming supports better services*:

  • to send and receive e-mail (including corporate one) ;
  • to send photos and video;
  • to load music, video, pictures and software;
  • to communicate;
  • to play online games via Internet.

*Contact your operator for more detailed information about WLAN-roaming and services available for subscribers.

Burgeoning cellular market has instilled a taste and habit to be “within call” leading to ever growing demand of mobile subscribers for a high-speed access to data networks. Delay in 3G network deployment due to economic reasons facilitated an explosive growth (both in fixed-line and mobile networks) of a more cost-effective way to meet the demand, it’s the setting up WLAN hot spots offering broad-band wireless access in locations where customers throng (hot-spot WLAN).

WLAN roaming solution by OJSC “MTT” involves three parties:

  • a WLAN operator offering a broad-band access to data transmission networks,
  • a mobile operator wishing to provide the access for its subscribers,
  • OJSC “MTT”- the operator of a common nationwide transit network for federal cellular networks.

MTT’s role in the solution is that of an integrator enabling exchange of authenticated traffic, gathering of billing and settlement carrier grade data to ensure smooth account settlement between operators and coordination of parties interaction in the course of service provision using MTT unique resource, such as a federal-scale transit network interconnecting virtually all Russian cellular networks operating in GSM, NMT and IMT-MC standards.

In line with GSMA guidelines set forth in PRD IR.61 authentication, authorization and accounting of subscribers roaming between GSM and WLAN networks should be implemented on the home operator side (mobile or WLAN operator).

OJSC “MTT” suggests a basic model to provide access to data networks for mobile subscribers over a WLAN operator network, as shown in the figure above.

OJSC “MTT” offers an opportunity to interconnect equipment of WLAN and mobile operators, carries out testing, negotiates all terms and conditions of contracts with operators, supports settlements between operators.

Currently, three modes of subscriber authentication to provide access to data services over WLANs are supported:

  • Authentication by SIM card: using various subscriber SIMs for authentication: enhanced SIM with both end authentication protocol, additional SIM linked to the subscriber account, “virtual” SIM (special SIM-emulating software feature installed in the subscriber terminal).
  • Authentication by an SMS request: a subscriber sends an SMS-request to the home mobile network operator requesting access to services, the request processing server responds with an SMS containing the session login and password.
  • Prepaid card authentication: using a session login and password on prepaid cards of various values.

Payment for rendered services

  • Subscribers pay to the home network operator (mobile or WLAN) according to invoices for WLAN-roaming services rendered;
  • The home network operator pays to OJSC “MTT” according to invoices for using WLAN operator’s and MTT’s services by its subscribers;
  • OJSC “MTT” pays out to the WLAN operator according to invoices for services rendered to subscribers of the home network operator.
