In the 2000s the boom in the telecom market fostered the company’s growth, and riding the wave MTT developed into one of the largest and most important players. The growing business was stimulated by the continuously upgrading network across Russia, the accession of new operators and the growing list of services such as the provision of data transmission and telematic services. Only in 2000, MTT’s traffic increased by more than 2.5 times. In 2001, MTT launched a project to promote its activities in the regions. The company started creating convenient uniform access points to directly connect local providers to the transit network. In 2002 the company addressed the challenge to facilitate the interoperability between fixed and mobile communication networks and provide ever-increasing distance traffic by creating a local switching centre. MTT’s first local switching centre came into operation in St. Petersburg as early as in December 2002.
In 2003 Neva Line, St. Petersburg’s major telecom provider, merged with MTT. That very year MTT began to offer local providers GPRS-roaming services.
In 2004 over 200 mobile communications subnets were connected to MTT’s transit network, including subnets providing mobile services in IMT-MC- 450 standard and approximately 100 fixed-line networks. The company began to shift the focus towards the use of multiservice traffic processing technologies as a part of the NGN (Next Generation Network) approach. In 2005 44 local switching centers were created; and the company started the preparatory process to obtain the licensed “long-distance provider” status to offer services to its end customers - subscribers of the fixed networks. The company has also added WLAN roaming - the service in high demand globally - to the list. The 2006 de-monopolisation of distance communication was a watershed period in the Russian telecom market. That very year MTT JSC became the first provider to challenge and break the Rostelecom monopoly. By 2007 MTT had become a recognized significant player in the international telecommunications market. The provider oversaw more than half of the traffic from Russian mobile operators to international destinations, and established a long-term relationship with the largest world providers. Since early 2008 the company won over 100 open tenders to provide state enterprises and organizations with domestic and international long-distance communication. In 2009 MTT offered new services to corporate and retail customers; the company was actively seeking international cooperation; the company’s own network underwent significant change. That year the company also launched the system of routing domestic and international traffic, which significantly improved the management of voice traffic. 2010 saw further development of services for both individuals and corporate clients.
